Bean Jewelry How To

December 10, 2025

I am happy that Bean Jewelries are received well and often asked what kind of tools I use to make jewelries with beans. So here I list up my suggestions.

Tools

Basic Tools for making bean jewelries
Micro drill bits to make holes on beans
Set of micro drills for workshop (0.8mm-1.0mm)
  • Your favorite beans! I especially like large beans to make a simple necklace.
  • Micro drill 0.8-1.0 mm up to the size of your parts and beans. A set of drill bits is a good option to save cost for a workshop.
    • If you make a lot of holes, it may make sense to invest on milling machine. I use the one from Proxxon, which has worked fine for more than 5 years.
    • Proxxon MICROMOT https://www.proxxon.com/en/micromot/28500.php
    • MICROMOT mains adapter https://www.proxxon.com/en/micromot/28707.php
  • Pliers (Ideally three pliers: round-nose plier, flat-nose plier, and cutting plier)
  • Jewelry parts (Open jump rings, wax coated cotton cord, chain, necklace closing, ear ring parts etc)
  • Coating (Transparent nail polish or non coating. I'm experimenting with wax + oil as a sustainable option)
  • Protection for table (Cutting mat, used magazine etc)

How to make a simple bean necklace

  1. Make a hole on the edge of a bean.
  2. Open the jump ring and let it catch the hole in the bean. (Don't have to go through the bean especially if it's large.)
  3. Hold the jump ring and coat the bean with transparent nail polish or skip this process.
  4. Set chain or cord then it's done! If you use cord, you can make the length of the necklace adjustable.
