Birds from Leftovers

May 20, 2026

I designed a “bird mobile” that can be made using leftover wood pieces from laser cutting at auf weiter flur, a maker space in Augustusburg. The idea behind this mobile was to create something playful and accessible for both children and adults while reusing material waste.

At the Augustusburger Naturmarkt on 17th May 2026, I set up a workshop table where visitors could freely paint their birds and take them home. Every bird became unique through different color combinations and decorations, and in the end, I was happy to see around thirty birds “flew away” to new homes.

For me personally, this project was also a great opportunity to practice using the laser cutter. By making prototypes and adjusting the design files, I gradually became more confident using the machine and started to feel that I could really create things like this myself. Big thanks to Paula Meier, who offers a great laser cutter course at auf weiter flur.
